Moorea Travel Guide: Best Things to Do, Where to Eat & How to Get Around

Updated: Sep 3

Getting to Moorea

Moorea is located just 17 kilometers (10 miles) northwest of Tahiti, making it the perfect first stop to experience the natural beauty of French Polynesia. The island is easily accessible by ferry from Tahiti (about 30 minutes) or by a short domestic flight.

We arrived by ferry and left by plane, enjoying both experiences.

Getting Around Moorea

The best way to explore Moorea is by scooter or rental car. We recommend booking your vehicle in advance, as demand is high and scooters often sell out quickly. We learned this the hard way—scooters were fully booked upon our arrival, so we ended up renting a car instead.

Our accommodation was a small guesthouse-style stay we booked through Booking.com—simple but charming, and perfect as a base for exploring the island.

Best Things to Do in Moorea

1. Drive Around the Island

It takes just 1.5 hours to drive the full loop around Moorea without stops, but trust us—you’ll want to stop often for views, beaches, and hidden gems along the way.

2. Toatea Lookout

Our first breathtaking view in French Polynesia came from Toatea Lookout, overlooking the lagoon and mountains. It’s the picture-perfect view you imagine when dreaming of Moorea.

3. Canoe Adventure to Swim With Sharks and Rays

One of the highlights of Moorea is swimming with blacktip reef sharks and stingrays. You can book a tour, but it’s also easy and affordable to do on your own. We rented a canoe from Tipnautic on Tipaniers Beach (1500 CFP for two people for one hour). Note: Tipaniers Beach is now private, so you’ll need to tell the guard you’re going to Tipnautic.

4. Belvedere Lookout

Belvedere Lookout is Moorea’s most famous viewpoint, located at 820 feet (250 meters). From here, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of Opunohu Bay, Cook’s Bay, and the dramatic Mount Rotui that separates them. It’s a must-visit for photographers and anyone who loves jaw-dropping scenery.

5. Pineapple Fields

Moorea is known for its sweet pineapples, and visiting the fields is a unique experience. Direct access is restricted to tours, but if you drive toward Ranch Opunohu, you’ll spot fields along the way. Even from a distance, they’re impressive!

Where to Eat in Moorea

Coco Beach

A dreamy spot for a full day of snorkeling, relaxing, and eating by the water. Perfect for groups of friends or couples looking for a laid-back tropical experience.

Snack Mahana

This gorgeous waterfront restaurant serves generous portions of fresh local dishes. It’s a must-visit and one of the best food experiences on the island.

In terms of natural beauty, Moorea doesn’t disappoint. With its turquoise lagoon, lush mountains, and abundant marine life, every day feels like an adventure. Swimming with sharks and rays, snorkeling in coral gardens, and relaxing at scenic lookouts are all part of the experience.

Moorea offers a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, making it one of the most unforgettable destinations in French Polynesia.
