A Paradise for Honeymooners, Watersport Enthusiasts, and Nature Lovers

Moorea is located just 17 kilometers (10 miles) northwest of Tahiti, making it the perfect first stop to get a taste of the beauty of French Polynesia. Moorea is easily accessible from Tahiti by ferry or plane.

We arrived by ferry and left by plane. To get around the island, we recommend booking a scooter or car in advance. We assumed we could arrange one upon arrival, but since Moorea is a popular destination, scooters were fully booked. In the end, we rented a car instead. Once that was sorted, we headed to our accommodation, which we found on Booking.com. It was a small Airbnb-style place with three rooms—simple but cute.

Things to Do in Moorea

We spent the day driving around the island (it takes about 1.5 hours to drive the whole loop without stops). Here are our top must-see spots:

  • Toatea Lookout – This was our first breathtaking view in French Polynesia. The lookout perfectly captures the stunning scenery you imagine when you think of this part of the world.

  • Hire a Canoe to Swim with Sharks and Rays – We rented a canoe and paddled out to swim with sharks and rays. You can book a tour for this, but we recommend saving your money for a full-day tour on another island, like Bora Bora, since this is easy to do on your own. We rented our canoe at Tipnautic on Tipaniers Beach. Note: the beach is now private, so you’ll need to let the guard know you're going to Tipnautic. We paid 1500 CPF for 2 for 1 hour.

  • Belvedere Lookout - Belvedere Lookout is the highest accessible viewpoint by car in Moorea, located at an elevation of around 820 feet (250 meters). From the observation deck, you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the island's northern half. The towering mountain in front of you is Mount Rotui, which separates Moorea's two main bays: Opunohu Bay and Cook’s Bay.

  • Pineapples Fields - On your way down from Belvedere Lookout, be sure to stop and see the pineapple fields, another popular attraction in Moorea. To access the fields directly, you'll need to book a tour, as the road is restricted to tour vehicles. However, if you drive towards Ranch Opunohu, you'll still be able to spot some fields along the way.

Where to eat

  • Coco Beach – We spent a fun-filled day relaxing, snorkeling, eating, and drinking there with friends. It's the perfect spot for a laid-back, enjoyable day!

  • Snack Mahana – This gorgeous waterfront spot offers excellent, generous portions of food. It’s an absolute must-visit!

In terms of natural beauty, Moorea doesn’t disappoint. You can expect to encounter incredible marine life – swimming alongside sharks, and rays is almost a given.
