Tucked away in the heart of the Auvergne region in south-central France, Le Puy-en-Velay is a magnificent small town that captivates visitors with its rich history, spiritual significance, and vibrant charm. Famous as one of the starting points of the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James), this picturesque town welcomes pilgrims from around the world, creating a unique atmosphere of reflection, tradition, and cultural exchange.
A city steeped in history and faith
One of the first landmarks that captures attention is the Cathédrale Notre-Dame du Puy, dramatically perched above the old town. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture and a place of devotion that has shaped the town’s identity for centuries.
Equally striking is the statue of Notre-Dame de France, a monumental Virgin Mary sculpture that overlooks the town from a volcanic peak. Built in the 19th century from melted-down cannons, it stands as both a religious icon and a symbol of peace and protection.

Le Puy-en-Velay is filled with extraordinary sights, both spiritual and architectural. Among them:
Cathédrale Notre-Dame du Puy — a UNESCO World Heritage site and the heart of the town. If you can, don’t miss the pilgrims’ mass held early in the morning, where those beginning their Camino de Santiago receive a special blessing. Rocher Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe — an astonishing chapel perched atop a volcanic needle of rock. Built in the 10th century, it seems to defy gravity. The climb of 268 steps may be a challenge, but the breathtaking views and the sheer wonder of standing at the top make it unforgettable.
Statue of Notre-Dame de France — towering above the town on Corneille Rock, this massive Virgin Mary statue (cast from melted-down cannons after the Crimean War) is a powerful symbol of protection and peace. The climb to the top is rewarding, with panoramic views stretching across the entire valley.
Camino de Santiago departure point — in the cathedral square, you’ll find the symbolic marker where pilgrims begin their journey along the Via Podiensis, one of the four main French routes of the Camino de Santiago. Standing here, you can feel the weight of history and the excitement of countless journeys that have begun in this very spot.
Fortress of Polignac — a medieval stronghold overlooking the Auvergne countryside. It offers not only a fascinating dive into history but also panoramic vistas that stretch for miles.
A feast for the senses
Le Puy-en-Velay is also a destination for food lovers. The region is renowned for its lentilles vertes du Puy (green lentils of Puy), an AOC-protected delicacy with a nutty flavor, often featured in hearty, comforting dishes.
