The Garden City of Lights

Kuala Lumpur (KL) is a city that blends the ultra-modern with the traditional; think skyscrapers, street markets, green parks, and historic temples - all in one place. Whether you're here for shopping, food, culture, or adventure, KL has something for everyone.

During our first visit to Kuala Lumpur in 2023, the city didn’t quite win us over. But returning and understanding it better allowed us to appreciate it so much more this time!

How Many Days in Kuala Lumpur

KL is a great city for a short stopover or a longer stay. We stayed for 2 nights both times. Here’s a rough guide to help plan your visit:

  • 1-2 days: A quick city break - see the Petronas Towers, Batu Caves, and Chinatown.

  • 2-3 days: A well-rounded experience - explore KLCC, Bukit Bintang, local markets, and nightlife.

  • 4+ days: Time to go beyond the city - take a day trip to Melaka or the Cameron Highlands.

If you're passing through Malaysia, we recommend at least 3 nights in KL to fully experience the city's energy without feeling rushed!

Things To Do

Kuala Lumpur is a city that blends modern skyscrapers with rich cultural heritage. Whether you’re here for a short layover or a longer stay, there’s plenty to see and do. Here are some must-visit spots to add to your itinerary!

1. Stroll Through KLCC Park

Located right next to the iconic Petronas Towers, KLCC Park is the perfect place to take a breather from the city buzz. Walk around the lake, cool off at the fountains, or just find a shady spot and enjoy the skyline views. If you’re lucky, you might even catch the Lake Symphony light and water show in the evening!

2. Get Sky-High Views at KL Tower

For some of the best panoramic views of the city, head to the KL Tower (Menara Kuala Lumpur). The Sky Deck and Sky Box (a glass-bottomed platform!) offer breathtaking views - especially at sunset.

3. Admire the Iconic Petronas Towers

You can’t visit KL without seeing the Petronas Towers up close! These twin skyscrapers were once the tallest buildings in the world and are still the tallest twin towers today. Snap a photo from below, or go up to the Skybridge and Observation Deck for city views.

4. Explore the Batu Caves (& Manayava Cave)

Batu Caves

One of KL’s most famous temples, Batu Caves is a must-visit. Climb the 272 colorful steps leading up to a massive limestone cave, where you'll find a Hindu temple inside. Watch out for the cheeky monkeys! Don't make the same mistake we did—don't miss the Manayava Cave right next to it!

5. Shop & Wander at Central Market

While it’s not the biggest or most modern mall in KL, it's a great place to pick up gifts! Its powder blue, art deco exterior stands out, and inside, you'll find crafts, batik prints, souvenirs, and handmade goods.

6. Step Into the Colors of Brickfields (Little India)

Brickfields, also known as Little India, is a vibrant neighborhood filled with spice-scented streets, and delicious Indian cuisine.

7. Experience the Bustling Energy of Petaling Street (Chinatown)

Petaling Street is KL’s famous Chinatown, known for its street markets, bargain shopping, and amazing street food.

8. Hang Out in Bukit Bintang

Bukit Bintang is Kuala Lumpur’s entertainment and shopping hub, buzzing with energy day and night. Don’t miss Jalan Alor, the famous food street!

9. Wander the Streets for Street Art

KL has a thriving street art scene, with hidden murals and creative graffiti tucked away in different parts of the city. Some of the best places to explore include Kwai Chai Hong in Chinatown, Jalan Alor Backstreet, and the Laman Seni street art alley in Shah Alam.

10. Visit Thean Hou Temple

Thean Hou Temple

One of the most beautiful temples in KL, Thean Hou Temple is a stunning Chinese temple dedicated to the goddess of the sea. Perched on a hill, it offers panoramic views of the city, intricate architecture, and a peaceful atmosphere—especially magical during Chinese festivals. You can easily visit the temple; there is no entrance fee.

11. Marvel at the Pink Mosque (Putra Mosque)

While we didn't have the chance to go there, we've heard good things about it, so it's worth adding here. Located in Putrajaya, about 30 minutes from KL, the Putra Mosque (nicknamed the Pink Mosque) is one of Malaysia’s most breathtaking mosques. Its rose-tinted dome, beautiful Islamic architecture, and lakefront setting make it a must-visit for photographers and culture lovers.

12. Hang Out in Bangsar

Bangsar is one of KL’s trendiest neighborhoods, perfect for café hopping, nightlife, and boutique shopping.

13. Take a Day Trip to Melaka

If you have an extra day, take a trip to Melaka, a UNESCO-listed city just 2 hours from KL. Explore its Dutch colonial buildings, colorful street art, and lively Jonker Street Night Market. Don’t leave without trying the famous chicken rice balls. We absolutly loved exploring Melaka for 3 days!

Where did we stay?

  • Bukit Bintang – Best for Shopping & Nightlife

Bukit Bintang is Kuala Lumpur’s main shopping and entertainment hub, packed with malls, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. It’s one of the most convenient places to stay, with easy access to public transport and plenty of activities day and night.

  • KLCC – Best for Iconic Views & Luxury

KLCC is just north of Bukit Bintang and home to the Petronas Towers and KLCC Park. This area is great if you want a more upscale experience, with luxury hotels, rooftop bars, and fine dining. It’s also a little quieter than Bukit Bintang but still within walking distance of shopping and entertainment.
