During our 7-day trip, we traveled across Java — from landing in Jakarta all the way to Banyuwangi, where we caught a boat to Bali. Along the way, we discovered why Java is one of the most fascinating islands in Southeast Asia.
This island is home to some of the world’s most impressive temples and volcanoes. From watching the sunrise over the majestic Borobudur Temple (the largest Buddhist temple in the world), to standing on the rim of Mount Bromo, and even getting close to Indonesia’s most active volcano, Mount Merapi, every stop was unforgettable.

Java Island is one of the most exciting places to visit in Indonesia. With ancient temples, dramatic volcanoes, and rich Javanese culture, it offers an adventure that’s completely different from the beaches of Bali.
We spent 7 days traveling across Java, starting in Jakarta, making our way through Yogyakarta, Malang, Mount Bromo, and Mount Ijen, and finally crossing by ferry from Banyuwangi to Bali. It was a week packed with early mornings, long train rides, and unforgettable experiences.
This guide is perfect for first-time visitors and anyone planning the classic Jakarta to Bali overland route. We’ll share our full Java itinerary, honest thoughts, and practical tips so you don’t have to spend hours piecing everything together.

Before diving into the itinerary, here are some quick facts about Java Island:
Location: Java sits between Sumatra and Bali and is one of Indonesia’s five main islands.
Population: With more than 150 million people, it’s the most populous island in the world.
Culture: A vibrant mix of modern cities, ancient temples, and traditional Javanese heritage.

Our 7-Day Itinerary Across Java
Overview:
Day 1 – Arrival in Jakarta
Day 2 – Yogyakarta
Day 4 – Malang
Day 5 – Tumpak Sewu Waterfall
Day 6 – Mount Bromo Sunrise & Journey to Banyuwangi
Day 7 – Mount Ijen Blue Fire & Crossing to Bali
Below is the detailed itinerary. The suggested number of nights is provided as an indication only, based on our experience.
Day 1 – Arrival in Jakarta (recommend 1 night)
We landed at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta in the early afternoon. Our plan was to stay three nights, but after exploring for a day, we realized Jakarta wasn’t really the kind of city we enjoy visiting. The traffic was overwhelming, the streets crowded, and we found it difficult to move around.
After talking with other travelers, we learned many felt the same. Our recommendation: if you stop in Jakarta, keep it short — maybe one day to see Monas, the Dutch colonial area, and Chinatown. Otherwise, skip it entirely and fly straight to Yogyakarta.

Day 2–3 – Yogyakarta (recommend 1–2 nights)

We booked a day tour that included:

A jeep tour around Mount Merapi, one of Indonesia’s active volcanoes.
A visit to the stunning Prambanan Temple.
It was a long day, and we were tired by the time we reached Prambanan, but the experience was absolutely worth it.
Other must-sees in Yogyakarta:
Malioboro Street in the evening.
The Sultan’s Palace (Kraton).
Traditional batik art.
The Water Castle.
Day 4 – Malang (recommend 1-2 nights)
From Yogyakarta, we took a train to Malang (clean, but no Wi-Fi this time).
In Malang, we explored the Kajoetangan Heritage Village, visited Jodipan Rainbow Village, a colorful art district that used to be a slum and the Blue Village.
We then booked a 3-day, 2-night tour — and while it meant very little sleep, it was one of the highlights of our trip. Be prepared for crowds, as these are very popular spots.
Day 5 – Tumpak Sewu Waterfall
Our tour started with a 5 AM pickup to visit Tumpak Sewu Waterfall. This was one of the most amazing natural wonders we saw in Java and an absolute must-do. Make sure you pack water shoes as you'll need them for this visit. We returned to Malang in the afternoon to rest before the next big adventure.
Day 6 – Mount Bromo Sunrise & Journey to Banyuwangi
At 11:30 PM, our driver picked us up with a jeep for the Mount Bromo Sunrise Tour. We waited at King Kong Hill for sunrise, bundled up in warm clothes — it gets really cold, don’t underestimate it!
The sunrise was breathtaking, with a panoramic view over Bromo’s crater and the surrounding mountains. Afterward, we hiked across volcanic sand and up to the crater itself. After Bromo, we endured a 6–7 hour drive to Banyuwangi. We had dinner, managed three hours of sleep, and at 11:30 PM we were on the road again — this time for Mount Ijen.
Day 7 – Mount Ijen Blue Fire & Crossing to Bali
The midnight hike to the crater is physically challenging. You'll have a short medical visit and you’ll need a mask because of the sulfur gases, but witnessing the blue fire phenomenon and the sunrise over the turquoise crater lake was unforgettable. By 9 AM, we were back at our accommodation for a shower before catching the ferry.

From Banyuwangi, it’s a short ferry ride to Gilimanuk, Bali. This marked the end of our whirlwind week through Java. Tired but full of memories, we were ready to slow down on Bali’s beaches.
Our Honest Thoughts About Java
Favorites: Borobudur Sunrise, Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, Mount Ijen.
Challenges: Very little sleep, long drives, volcanic dust, and big crowds at popular spots.
Who it’s for: Adventure travelers, culture lovers, and photographers.
Would we recommend Java over Bali? Not necessarily — but if you love temples, volcano hikes, and raw adventure, Java is the perfect complement to Bali’s beaches.
Travel Tips for Visiting Java
Getting around: Trains are clean and reliable; private tours and drivers are best for Bromo and Ijen.
Budget: Entrance fees, jeep tours, and guides add up — plan for mid-range costs.
What to pack: Warm clothes for sunrise tours, water and hiking shoes.
