Tasmania is an adventure lover’s dream, with its stunning landscapes, rich history, and incredible food scene. From exploring Hobart’s MONA museum to hiking Cradle Mountain, this 7-day itinerary covers the best of Tasmania’s east coast and beyond.
Whether you’re into hiking, history, or just enjoying breathtaking scenery, this guide will help you plan an unforgettable road trip.
We spent seven days exploring Tasmania, renting a van near the airport. We planned our road trip with two-hour driving stretches, making it easy to pace ourselves.

What to expect
We visited Tasmania in April, over Easter, and it surprised us in all the best ways! Here’s what stood out during our trip:
Incredible Food (Especially Oysters!). The food scene in Tasmania is amazing, with fresh seafood being a real highlight. The oysters, in particular, were some of the best we’ve ever had—so good that they’ve ruined oysters for us anywhere else!
Less Crowds, More Enjoyment. One of the things we loved most was how uncrowded it felt. We never had to deal with overwhelming crowds, making the experience so much more enjoyable.
Easy Camping & Van Life. Finding places to camp was a breeze compared to the mainland. A cool discovery? Many pubs allow you to park and sleep in their car parks for free, no purchase required (though we often ended up grabbing a meal there anyway!).
Bigger Than You Think. For some reason, we imagined Tasmania to be really small, but it’s actually quite spacious. We ended up driving a fair bit, so expect some road time if you want to explore properly!
Here is our utlimate 7-day road-trip itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Hobart
Landed around 6 PM and checked into Astor Private Hotel – a charming, old-school stay that feels more like visiting your grandparents than a typical chain hotel.
Dinner at Old Wharf Restaurant – Amazing oysters, seafood, and fish in a cozy atmosphere. A great start to the trip!
Day 2: Exploring Hobart & Drive to Port Arthur
MONA Museum – MUST-DO! This museum is an absolute highlight of Hobart, with mind-blowing exhibits and interactive experiences. We also booked the Seen Unseen experience, which was totally worth it! We could have stayed longer.
Picked up the campervan around 2 PM and hit the road towards Port Arthur. On the way we stopped for some fresh oysters!
Overnight stay at Dunalley Hotel (car park) – parked here for the night and had dinner at the pub. Pub food and, authentic atmosphere.
Day 3: Port Arthur & Freycinet National Park
Port Arthur Historic Site – MUST-DO! We arrived around 9 AM and had an amazing visit. The site is steeped in history, and exploring the ruins gives a powerful insight into Tasmania’s past. We definetly recommend booking a guided tour for this one!
Drove north towards Freycinet National Park, stopping along the way for scenic breaks.
Stayed at River and Rocks Campground – an unforgettable sunset by the river! One of the most magical moments of the trip.
Day 4: Wineglass Bay & Bay of Fires
Hiked to Wineglass Bay Lookout early in the morning. A short but rewarding hike with stunning views over one of the world’s most beautiful beaches.
Breakfast in Bicheno – A cozy spot with a beautiful ocean view and great food.
Drove along the east coast, stopping at a couple of wineries and a cheese shop to sample local delights. We bought different cheese, bread, charcuterie and wine for the diner.
Bay of Fires – Absolutely BEAUTIFUL! The contrast of white sand, turquoise water, and orange-lichen-covered rocks is breathtaking.
Camped at Pyengana Recreational Facility – basic but had $2 showers, a luxury while road-tripping!
Day 5: Cradle Mountain National Park
Short stop in Launceston to stretch and grab supplies.
Visited King Solomon’s Caves – A unique and intimate cave experience where we got incredibly close to the walls. Well worth the visit!
Stayed at a lakeside campground – A peaceful, remote spot to unwind before tackling Cradle Mountain.
Day 6: Cradle Mountain Hike & Long Drive
12KM Hike – One of the most epic hikes we’ve done!
Route: Ronny Creek Car Park → Overland Track → Marion’s Lookout → Kitchen Hut → Cradle Summit (HARD +) → Face Track → Hanson Peak → Dove Lake Car Park.
This hike had everything—steep climbs, rewarding summit views, and jaw-dropping landscapes. A challenging but incredible experience!
Drove 3 hours to Derwent Hotel (don’t ask how we managed after the hike!)
Dinner at Derwent Hotel – A cozy and authentic pub with great curry!
Day 7: Lake St Clair & Back to Hobart
Visited Lake St Clair, the deepest freshwater lake in Australia—a beautiful and peaceful spot to start the day.
Drove back towards Hobart, stopping for a much-needed $1 shower (and even cleaned the van!).
Lunch in Hobart – A delicious seafood feast to end the trip on a high note.
Visited the Hobart Museum (free entry!) – A nice, low-key visit before heading to the airport.
Dropped off the van and caught our flight home.
