Thinking of celebrating Thai New Year in Thailand? Here's what it's really like to experience Songkran Festival on Koh Phangan — one of the country's most fun (and wettest!) holidays.

What is Songkran?

Songkran marks the beginning of the traditional Thai New Year, typically celebrated in mid-April. While it started as a religious and cultural holiday focused on cleansing and renewal (with water symbolizing purification), over the years it has evolved into a nationwide giant water fight — especially in popular tourist destinations.

A Wet and Wild Adventure

We joined the fun with a small water gun in hand, hopping on our scooter to explore the island. We expected a bit of splashing, but what we found was next-level.

People of all ages lined the streets, armed with massive buckets, hoses, and supersoakers. The moment we hit the road, we were soaked — locals and travelers alike were throwing buckets of water straight at us as we drove by! It was hilarious, surprising, and honestly, a little intense (and slippery!) at times.

Island-Wide Celebration

Throughout the island, everyone was taking part — from small roadside gatherings to the main village, where we found two or three music stages, crowds dancing in the street, and full-on water battles happening nonstop. It felt like the whole island had transformed into one big party.

Interestingly, in Koh Phangan, the celebration lasted only one day. But in bigger cities like Bangkok or Chiang Mai, Songkran typically lasts for three full days!

Tips for Celebrating Songkran in Thailand

💦Expect to get wet — there’s no way around it!

📱 Waterproof your phone or use a dry bag.

🛵 Be careful on scooters — roads are slippery and visibility can be tricky.

👕 Wear quick-drying clothes and bring a change of clothes.

📍 Choose your location wisely.

If you ever find yourself in Thailand during Songkran, be prepared to get wet — whether you're ready or not. It's an unforgettable way to experience Thai culture, full of joy, community spirit, and chaotic fun. Just make sure to waterproof your phone and keep your sense of humor close by!
