What to Expect
Negombo, located just 45 minutes north of Colombo, is a laid-back beach destination known for its bustling fish market and vibrant local culture. It’s a great place to start or end your Sri Lanka adventure, offering a more relaxed atmosphere compared to the capital.
Colombo, Sri Lanka’s dynamic capital, is a city of contrasts—where colonial architecture meets modern skyscrapers. However, it can be a bit challenging to explore as a tourist, with its busy streets and scattered attractions.
>> In both Negombo and Colombo, tuk-tuk drivers will honk at you offering city tours of the must-see sights. It's not very expensive and might be an efficient way to explore these cities.
How Long to Stay
We spent two nights in Negombo and two nights in Colombo, which felt like a good amount of time to explore both destinations.
Things to do in Negombo

Negombo was our first stop for two main reasons: it’s close to the airport, making it a convenient place to start, and it’s where we picked up our tuk-tuk for the adventure ahead. For more details about our incredible tuk-tuk journey, check out our full article!
#1 Visit the Fish Market
One of Negombo’s biggest attractions, the fish market is a must-see if you want to experience the local way of life. Arrive early in the morning to witness fishermen unloading their fresh catch of the day—tuna, prawns, and even sharks! The lively bargaining and traditional fish-drying process on the beach make it a fascinating visit.
#2 Explore the Colonial Churches
Negombo is often called "Little Rome" due to its many colonial-era churches, a legacy of Portuguese and Dutch rule. St. Mary's Church is one of the most beautiful. Another worth visiting is St. Sebastian’s Church, inspired by the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. #3 Visit Angurukaramulla Viharaya Temple This Buddhist temple is one of Negombo’s hidden gems, featuring a 6-meter-tall Buddha statue, intricate murals, and an ancient library with centuries-old scriptures. The temple is an incredible place to admire Sri Lankan Buddhist art and architecture while enjoying a peaceful atmosphere away from the bustling city.
#4 Watch the Most Incredible Sunsets
Negombo Beach is famous for its breathtaking sunsets. Find a spot along the golden coastline or enjoy a drink at one of the beachfront restaurants as the sky turns vibrant shades of orange, pink, and purple. The sunset here is the perfect way to wind down after a day of exploring.

Things to do in Colombo
Colombo was our last stop, and after spending weeks in the quieter parts of Sri Lanka, it felt like a completely different world—almost overwhelming at first. The city’s fast pace and chaotic energy were a stark contrast to the serene beaches and lush landscapes we had grown used to, and honestly, it left us feeling a bit lost on our first afternoon.
We wandered around, unsure of where to go or what to see. After visiting Galle Fort, we expected something similar in Colombo Fort, but aside from the beautifully restored Old Dutch Hospital, now home to restaurants and cafés, much of the area felt abandoned.
However, by the second day, with a better plan in mind, we started to appreciate Colombo’s charm.

#1 Pettah market
Pettah Market is a must-see in Colombo—a colorful, and vibrant experience. The streets are packed with stalls selling everything from fresh produce and spices to electronics and clothing. It’s the perfect place to immerse yourself in local life and maybe even pick up a bargain!
#2 Red Mosque
The Red Mosque stands out with its striking red-and-white candy-striped architecture, inspired by the pomegranate. We were lucky to visit for free with a guide, but there are no clear visiting hours. If you're in the area, it’s worth checking if it’s open, though visiting during Ramadan may have different rules. #3 Colombo Fort
The Old Dutch Hospital, A beautifully restored colonial building now home to trendy restaurants —a perfect spot for a relaxed meal or a drink after sightseeing.
The Colombo Lighthouse
Sambodhi Chaithya Stupa, an impressive white stupa sitting on a platform above the harbor.
#4 Gangaramaya Temple
Gangaramaya Temple is one of the most famous temples in Colombo and a must-visit for anyone interested in Sri Lanka’s rich Buddhist heritage. #5 Lotus Tower
Dominating the Colombo skyline, the Lotus Tower is the tallest self-supported structure in South Asia, standing at an impressive 350 meters. The tower, shaped like a blooming lotus, symbolises Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage and economic growth. Visitors can take an elevator to the observation deck for panoramic views of the city
